What is Panchakarma โ€” and Why Does It Work?

Panchakarma means "five actions" โ€” five deep cleansing procedures that eliminate toxins (Ama) from the body at a cellular level, restoring the balance of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ
Vata
Air + Space. Movement, nervous system, elimination. Treated by: Basti, Abhyanga, Nasya
๐Ÿ”ฅ
Pitta
Fire + Water. Metabolism, digestion, transformation. Treated by: Virechana, Raktamokshana
๐ŸŒŠ
Kapha
Earth + Water. Structure, immunity, lubrication. Treated by: Vamana, Udvartana
๐Ÿ“‹ Before Every Panchakarma โ€” Purvakarma (Preparation)
๐Ÿงˆ Snehana (Internal Oilation)๐Ÿ’จ Swedana (Steam Therapy)๐Ÿฅ— Pathya Ahara (Special Diet)

Panchakarma is not a single treatment โ€” it is a comprehensive detoxification and rejuvenation system. Unlike symptomatic treatment, it removes the root cause of disease: the accumulation of undigested metabolic waste (Ama) and aggravated doshas in the body's tissues.

Every Panchakarma programme begins with Purvakarma โ€” preparatory procedures (internal oil intake and steam therapy) that loosen and mobilise accumulated doshas before the main cleansing. This is non-negotiable for safe and effective results.

After the main procedures, Paschatkarma (post-treatment care) ensures the body rebuilds properly. Diet restrictions, rest, and Rasayana herbs are prescribed to lock in the benefits.

Seasonal Timing

Best Seasons for Each Therapy

Ayurveda aligns treatment with seasons (Ritucharya). The right season maximises efficacy and minimises risk.

Vasanta โ€” Spring

Feb โ€“ April (Kapha peak)

Best for: Vamana
Kapha liquefies in spring warmth and is easiest to eliminate upward. Ideal for respiratory and skin conditions.

Varsha โ€” Monsoon

July โ€“ Sept (Vata peak)

Best for: Basti
Vata rises in monsoon. All neurological, joint, and muscular conditions benefit most from monsoon Basti courses.

Sharad โ€” Autumn

Oct โ€“ Nov (Pitta peak)

Best for: Virechana & Raktamokshana
Pitta accumulated in summer erupts in autumn. Virechana is most potent and safest in this season.

Note: External therapies (Shirodhara, Abhyanga, Kati Basti) can be performed year-round.
